What is Yoga ?

Yoga   developed in India, and is a spiritual practice that has been evolving for the last 5000 years or so.

Yoga means "Union" in Sanskrit, the classical language of India.

According to the yogis, true happiness, liberation and enlightenment comes from union.

In hatha yoga,for example,postures and breathing exercises help to purify the mind,body and spirit so the yogi can attain union.

Why do Yoga ?

There is   a short answer and a long one to that question.

The short one is simply that yoga makes you feel better.Yoga lets you tune in,chill out,shape up---and that all at the same time.

What are the Benefits ?

For   starters ,yoga is good for assisting with health problems. Research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety,arthritis,asthma,back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic

fatique,depression,diabetes,epilepsy,headaches,heart disease,multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases, but there is more - it can :

  • Improve muscle tone,flexibility,strength and stamina
  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Boost self esteem
  • Improve concentration and creativity
  • Reduce fat
  • Improve circulation
  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Create a sense of well being and calm.

And this all just the surface stuff !

Can Everyone Practise Yoga ?

The answer is yes! All you need is attitude-the desire to expand self awareness-a big heart and a small ego.

For the less flexible, the elderly   and people with medical conditions we are able to provide equipment-or yoga props as we call them,to assist you.

Yoga Props...?

Props can help you achieve the proper alignment ,balance and make the postures a bit easier.The use of props also minimizes the possibility of   strain,   helping to support your muscles , and allowing you to save energy   because you are using less energy in the postures

Here are some props to start with.

  • Non-slip mat (to keep the body at place during the posture)
  • Strap or belt (around the arms or legs to keep them in alignment)
  • Cotton or wool blanket (to prevent direct contact with the floor /or for soft ,contact with a hard floor)
  • Wooden or foam blocks (to give extra support to the arms,legs,head and joints).

What Do I Wear ?

Its best to wear loose or stretch clothing. Yoga is traditionally practised barefoot However ,being in cold Holland , you can wear socks if you like !

When Do I Practise Yoga ?

At any time during the day. Practising in the morning is an excellent way to revitalize the mind and body, and start the day on a good   note. In the evening it can help    induce restful sleep. Its best to practise yoga on an empty stomach , and certainly not earlier than an hour or two   after a heavy meal. To avoid getting really hungry during your practise you may have a little food -perhaps fruit -an hour beforehand.
